Prater, John

Class of 2021

John acquired his love for the cowboy life from his father Gene. John started riding bulls at an amateur level in 1964 at the age of 17 and continued until 1966 winning or placing at ICA Rodeos like Glenns Ferry. John joined the RCA in 1966 with his good friend John Quintana. Together they traveled to all the major rodeo’s up until the 1980’s.

Throughout his career John won and placed at many rodeo events including Ellensburg Washington, San Diego California, Fresno California, St. Paul Oregon, Long Beach California, Fort Worth Texas, Lewiston and Nampa Idaho to name a few.

During his rodeo days John braided ropes for many of the top riders. John was exceptionally good at this and it led to him having many ropes in the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.

Following the rodeo years john started training two-year-old horses at the racetrack for trainers like Jim Gibbs, Blaine Schvaneveldt, and Bob A. Robinson. Once he stopped training race horses, he teamed up with his good friend Jim Roeser to start what would become a long successful journey training reined cow horses for the show ring. John won the 1st IRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity and he has continued to train horses for the cow horse, cutting events and sales.
